Obsidian by Jennifer L. Armentrout
This was an interesting take on the paranormal romance genre. I was NOT expecting aliens; I was betting on werewolves. Katy and her mom move to West Virginia for a new start after the death of her father. Mom works at a hospital (we are given the impression that she's a nurse but it's never outright stated). Katy goes next door to ask for directions and meets her neighbor who she decides is *very* hot, but he's a jerk. At the grocery she meets his twin sister (also stunning) who is much nicer. Katy and Dee become friends. Daemon is reluctantly coerced into spending time with Katy and he is occasionally not horrible. In fact he is frequently saving her life; from a bear, her drunk homecoming date, a random attack after leaving the library, and even a truck. Each of these incidents leave a trace on her and after the truck incident he finally shows and tells her the truth: he's an alien from a planet that was destroyed by a species that is trying to kill him and all like him - that's who her attacker was. Katy and Daemon have this big will they or won't they and she ends up killing one of the bad aliens and saving his life. You would think that would make him stop being horrible to her, but he is extremely inconsistent. Then, Dee gets a call while she and Katy are hanging out - the bad alien is headed their direction. Katy makes Dee use her powers and put a brighter trace on her so she can lead the villain away. It works but Katy is no match for him. Then Daemon shows up and is putting up a good fight, until Dee shows up. He gets distracted by checking on his sister and Katy and the villain goes in for the kill. All three of them are laying on the ground and Katy is actively dying so Daemon tries to heal her. She ends up holding both of their hands and channels their powers and kills the bad guy. Katy is in bad shape and Daemon sends Dee home, then he heals her, but at the end of the book we get a few chapters from his perspective and it seems like he split his soul, tying them to each other. This was enjoyable and I will definitely be reading the next book.
