Aunt Dimity's Good Deed by Nancy Atherton
This was a mystery but it was more an adventure/chase story than anything. Lori plans a trip to England for her and Bill as a second honeymoon because they are now estranged. He has a big case and can't come so his father comes instead. Senior ends up disappearing; he leaves a cryptic note and takes the journal that Aunt Dimity communicates through. Lori and Nell, her 12 year old neighbor, go on a cross country chase after Senior. They meet Gerald, the disgraced attorney who everyone thinks is having a tryst with a much older woman. They meet Lucy, the attorney and cousin of Gerald, who is holding the firm together. They meet Arthur, the bumbling attorney and other cousin of Gerald. They meed Aunt Anthea, Uncle Williston, and Timothy (Gerald's sick father). They are always one step behind Senior. Bill ends up showing up after getting injured while working on his big case. At the end we discover that Gerald is only a cousin by adoption; his father isn't a real Willis. We discover that he's not having a tryst, he's being blackmailed by the woman that Anthea's husband cheated on her with. We discover that he didn't just cheat, that he was skimming money from the firm and Gerald quit to protect Arthur who made some huge mistakes and to keep the mistress from exposing everything. But, Senior also figured all of this out and has a cop ready to take her into custody. Gerald and Lucy, who are not actually related, get married. Lori finds out she's pregnant. Senior has been putting the pieces in place to set up Bill in England. It was giving Scooby-Doo.
