Crime Series #20

The Bone Bed by Patricia Cornwell

Even though the science is the star in these book, the mystery was still top notch. Kay is sent an email with an image of a severed ear. They find out that it's from a paleontologist working in Canada. She has to be in court, but also has a body to rescue: it's attached to a leather back turtle and also stuck in the water. Turns out, the body is weighted on top and bottom so that if you aren't careful it will pull apart when you try to bring it up, decapitating the corpse and ruining your change of getting any of the remains. Kay is late to court. The judge, whom she has a good relationship with, berates her in front of the jury and gives her a steep fine. The judge definitely has a thing going with the prosecutor. Lucy, Pete, and Benton are all keeping things from her. Pete is being set up. Kay ends up rescuing a cat from a crime scene. Luke, Anna's nephew, starts working with Kay as her new second in command (I don't like him and neither do Pete or Benton). Benton is worried Kay is having an affair with Luke. Kay is worried that Benton is having an affair with Douglas (girl), his FBI colleague and sometime partner. Neither is having an affair. Turns out the paleontologist, the body in the water, and the court case are all related. They were all killed by the assistant to the man on trial. And he ends up killing Douglas before he gets caught. Also, the secret Lucy has been keeping? She and Janet are back together. This was twisty and turny and every guess I had was wrong.
