Break No Bones by Kathy Reichs
This was fine. Not great but not bad. Brennan is supervising some students on a dig and they find new bones at a Native American burial ground. We get introduced to a new character, the coroner, Emma, who is obviously very sick when we meet her. I was right that it was cancer, but I was wrong about what kind. Anyway, they are checking out the site because a developer wants to build condos or something, but now that it's being classified as a burial ground he's pissed. Pete, the ex-husband shows up and ends up staying in the same house as her. Ryan shows up and sees him hugging her because she had a really bad day and he drives off without taking to her. When she finally catches up to him days later she isn't nice about it and he admits he overreacted and they are fine and he comes to stay with her. Ryan and Pete were the best part of this book. Then, Pete gets shot. Turns out, the reason that Pete was down there was to look into the finances of a church/cult and find a missing daughter if he can. Well, she used to work at a free clinic and she realized the doctor was spending more than he was making and she went looking into the doctor. He has been killing homeless people and drug addicts and engaging in a black market organ harvesting scheme with a former med school buddy, who does the transplants in Mexico. Ryan gets jealous again when Brennan is struggling because Pete was shot and he goes back to Canada on bad terms. This was pretty good as far as these books go.
