The Bone Code by Kathy Reichs
This was unexpected. Yes, we had kid victims (again) but it wasn't what I was expecting. This had Tempe flying all over the place and dealing with a cold case. We have two people in a bucket. They are wrapped exactly like a case that she and Ryan had in Canada years ago that they weren't able to solve. So she is called in to South Carolina to help with this, and then goes back to Canada to look for similarities. Plus, there have been scientific breakthroughs since the original case, so off to exhume the bodies. Turns out 3 of the 4 bodies are related. The short version is, the oldest woman is the mother of 2 of the bodies. She worked for this company that was supposed to do some gene splicing through vaccines but she refused so they killed her and one of her kids. Then, the other kid was orphaned and she, while looking for her mom found someone she used to work with and showed up with her friend, another orphan, and started asking questions. He killed both girls to keep them quiet. He then killed his gene splicing accomplice and tried to kill Tempe, but couldn't manage it. Also, we have a mystery of a death mask, which was irrelevant to the story but was interesting. This was more a story about corporate greed and the egos of mankind than it was about the child victims because their ages weren't what lead to their deaths. This was one of the more scientifically interesting stories she's had in a while.
